Illinois St. handles Creighton 80-67
OMAHA, Neb. (AP)—Levi Dyer scored 20 points and five Illinois State players reached double figures in an 80-67 Missouri Valley Conference road win over Creighton on Saturday.
The 6-foot-11 reserve center hit five 3-pointers, including four in the first half when he shot 6-for-10 for the Redbirds (9-3, 1-0). It was the first home loss of the season for the Bluejays (9-2, 0-1).
Illinois State scored 11 of the first 13 points and led by as many as 19 in the first half after shooting 57 percent (17 of 30) from the field.
Dyer came off the bench to score 16 points before intermission. He hit three consecutive 3-pointers to cap a 22-7 run that gave Illinois State a 38-19 lead with 3:31 left in the first half.
Creighton rebounded from a slow start to pull within four at 16-12 on a driving basket by Josh Dotzler. But the Jays had only one field goal in the next six minutes while the Redbirds pulled away behind Dyer’s hot hand.
Illinois State’s 42-29 halftime lead dwindled to seven in the second half before a pair Osiris Eldrege baskets and a four-point play by Dyer put the game out of reach at 56-41. Eldridge scored all 15 of his points after intermission.
Anthony Slack added 11 points and 11 rebounds and Dinma Odiakosa and Boo Richardson each added 10 points for the Redbirds.
Creighton, now 8-1 at home this season, was led by freshman P’Allen Stinnett’s 22 points.
