Bucknell holds on to beat Long Beach State, 61-57
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP)—John Griffin had 15 points and Josh Linthicum scored off a pair of offensive rebounds in the final 70 seconds to lead Bucknell to a 61-57 win over Long Beach State in the consolation game of the Golden Bear Classic on Saturday night.
G.W. Boon and Justin Castleberry added 12 points apiece for the Bison (5-7), who had lost seven of nine before holding off a late run by the 49ers thanks to the work on the boards by Linthicum.
Coming off a season-high 18 points in Bucknell’s loss to North Dakota State a night earlier, Linthicum scored six straight points in the final 2:30 minutes against Long Beach State, getting four off offensive rebounds. His putback of a Castleberry missed jumper in the lane gave the Bison a 59-55 lead with 29 seconds left to play.
Linthicum finished with nine points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
Cornell Williams made a short jumper in the key to pull the 49ers within 59-57 but Castleberry sank two free throws with nine seconds remaining to seal the win.
Donovan Morris scored 19 of his career-high 27 points in the second half but it wasn’t enough for the 49ers, who shot just 20.8 percent in the first half and finished the game 19 of 52 (36.5 percent).
Greg Plater added 13 points and three assists while Williams had 11 rebounds.
