Tulane’s Gomez leads Green Wave past Alabama State
NEW ORLEANS (AP)—David Gomez scored 24 points to match his season high and lead Tulane past Alabama State for a 69-60 win on Friday.
Tulane (9-4), which led 30-28 at the half, extended its win streak to three. The Green Wave overcame a sluggish start in the first half by getting a near-perfect shooting performance in the early minutes of the second half to help put away the Hornets. Tulane hit its first seven field goals of that period and turned a two-point half time lead into an 11-point advantage.
Alabama State (4-5) never gave up though and used a 10-0 run near the midway point to pull within three points on a 3-pointer by Andrew Hayles to bring the score to 47-44 at the 10:52 mark. But the Green Wave regained its momentum with a 3-point play that led to a 7-0 spurt that pushed their lead back into double figures.
In addition to his 24 points, Gomez grabbed seven rebounds and became the 14th player in Tulane’s history to notch more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Robinson Louisme and Kevin Sims each had 10 as Tulane shot 51 percent from the field while holding Alabama State to 38.8 percent.
Hayles led the Hornets with 13 points, getting nine from 3-point range, while Brandon Gordon added 11 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Brandon Brooks and Roland Fitch each had 10.
