Mills and O’Leary lead Saint Mary’s over Howard, 97-48
MORAGA, Calif. (AP)—Patty Mills scored 23 points and Ian O’Leary recorded the second double-double of his career with 14 points and 10 rebounds as Saint Mary’s College had little trouble defeating Howard 97-48 in the Shamrock Office Solutions Classic.
Mills went the length of the court twice, splitting Howard defenders as he scored on layins to break an early 4-4 tie as Saint Mary’s (11-1) went on a 22-4 run, including 13 straight at one point to break the game open.
Saint Mary’s took advantage of its quickness and its height advantage, scoring virtually at will inside. The Gaels outscored Howard 12-0 on fast breaks, 32-0 on second-chance points and 58-26 in the paint. Saint Mary’s outrebounded Howard 53-23, including 24 offensive rebounds.
Saint Mary’s had six players in double figures. In addition to his 21 points, Mills, a 6-foot freshman guard from Canberra, Australia, had a career-high seven rebounds. O’Leary, a 6-foot-7 junior, had his first double-double since his freshman year. Omar Samhan had 15 points and nine rebounds. Tron Smith had 13 points, Carlin Hughes 12, while hitting four 3-pointers, and Diamon Simpson 11.
Eugene Myatt led Howard (3-10) with 11 points.
Saint Mary’s shot 60 percent in the first half while building a 51-24 lead and finished the night hitting 40 of 78 shots (51.3 percent). Howard shot 36.5 percent for the game, hitting 19-of-52.
The Gaels next face Cal State Fullerton (7-3), which defeated winless Furman (0-11) 103-72.
