Texas Southern falls, 78-60, in 11th consecutive loss
LAS VEGAS (AP)—Brian Burrell had a game high 20 points and eight rebounds for Texas-Pan American as the Broncos handed Texas Southern its 11th straight loss with a 78-60 victory Sunday afternoon at the Las Vegas Classic.
Texas-Pan American (7-9), which trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, scored the first eight points of the second half on it way to ending a five-game losing skid. The Broncos led 56-50 with nine minutes to play before scoring on nine straight possessions in a 20-0 run.
Nathan Hawkins, who went 10-of-14 from the free-throw line to finish with 18 points, keyed the outburst with six straight points.
Texas-Pan American only missed seven shots in the second half, while Texas Southern misfired on 13 straight during the decisive run in shooting 29 percent for the game.
Danny Puente added nine for the Broncos, while Zach Trader had eight.
Texas-Pan American finished 1-3 in the eight-team tournament. It squandered 15-point second half lead Saturday against Bethune-Cookman, falling 56-54 on a 35-foot desperation 3-pointer as time expired.
On Sunday, Texas Southern’s Ike Anthony connected on a trio of 3-pointers in the first half to help the Tigers (1-11) open a double-digit lead four minutes into the game.
Sollie Norwood was the lone Texas Southern scorer in double figures, finishing with 15 points.
