Thornton’s 20 points include 6 3-pointers; LSU beats Oregon St.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)—All but two of Marcus Thornton’s 20 points were on 3-point shots, one with 12 seconds left, as LSU beat Oregon State 67-61 on Saturday.

Thornton led the Tigers (7-4) and scored LSU’s last five points in the final five minutes.

He made two free throws with 55 seconds left to give LSU a 64-58 lead. A few seconds later, a 3-pointer by Roeland Schaftenaar cut the Tigers’ advantage in half before Thornton’s final, off-balance 3-point shot.

Anthony Randolph had 14 points and nine rebounds for LSU. Terry Martin’s 15 points included three 3-point shots.

Schaftenaar led the Beavers (6-5) with 14 points, all in the second half. Omari Johnson and Seth Tarver had 13 each.

Three 3-pointers by Thornton ignited a 19-7 run which gave LSU control of the game in the first half. After Randolph sank a pair of foul shots, Thornton made the first of his 3-pointers to give the Tigers their first lead at 7-5.

Sean Carter tied the score for Oregon State, but Thornton knocked down 3-pointers on consecutive possessions. Martin added a field goal and two free throws to help take a 21-12 lead with 10:43 left in the half.

Two free throws by Alex Farrer and four points from Randolph in the final 90 seconds gave LSU a 38-31 halftime lead. The Tigers made 13 of 16 foul shots in the first half.

Sparked by Schaftenaar’s three baskets, one a 3-point shot, the Beavers pulled within two points eight minutes into the second half, 49-47 with just over 12 minutes left.

Thornton answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession. The Tigers then held a four- to eight-point lead until Schaftenaar’s 3-ponter with 47 seconds left.
