Clarke’s 16 points lead Iona to 67-62 victory over Western Michigan
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP)—Devon Clarke scored 16 points and Dexter Gray added 14 as Iona held on to defeat Western Michigan 67-62 on Saturday.
Rashon Dwight and Milan Prodanovic both had 10 points for the Gaels (5-7), who never trailed in winning their third straight game. Gary Springer had seven points and 11 rebounds for Iona.
Joe Reitz scored 19 points, David Kool had 14 and Shawntes Gary 10 for the Broncos (5-7), losers in five of their last six games.
Prodanovic had 10 points and Gray added nine in helping Iona take a 36-27 halftime lead.
Clarke’s basket 3:07 into the second half gave the Gaels their biggest lead of the game, 43-28.
Western Michigan kept whittling at the lead until Kool’s 3-pointer with 1:04 left narrowed the deficit to 63-62, but the Broncs got no closer.
After Clarke made two free throws with 34 seconds left to increase the lead to 65-62, Derek Drews missed two 3-point attempts for the Broncos that could have tied the game.
Iona’s Kyle Camper made two free throws with four seconds left.
The Gaels outrebounded the Broncos 44-32 and were 20-of-27 from the free throw line to 10-of-22 for Western Michigan.
