Gomez leads Tulane over Georgia 70-69
HONOLULU (AP)—David Gomez hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 6.5 seconds remaining to give Tulane a 70-69 win over Georgia in the consolation round of the Rainbow Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs had one more chance, but Billy Humphrey’s 3-point attempt just before the buzzer bounced off the rim.
Gomez led Tulane (7-4) with 24 points, Kevin Sims added 15 and Robinson Louisme had 12 for the Green Wave.
Jeremy Price led Georgia (6-3) with 22 points in his first career start and Humphrey added 14.
Humphrey put Georgia ahead 65-63 with a 3-pointer from the left corner with 3:42 remaining.
But the Bulldogs made just half of their eight free throws down the stretch and Tulane made three of their four field goal attempts to secure the victory in a game that featured seven ties and 14 lead changes.
Tulane shot a season-high 56.3 percent from the field.
Georgia led 31-30 at the break.
Tulane will face St. John’s in the fifth place game of the Rainbow Classic on Saturday afternoon after Georgia meets host Hawaii for seventh place.
