Mansell’s late heroics lead Rider past Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—Harris Mansell scored 15 points—including the go-ahead basket in the final minute—to give Rider a 61-57 win over Rutgers on Friday night.
The Broncs (8-4) appeared to be in command before the Scarlet Knights (7-5) went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 57-57 with 2:02 left to play.
Neither team scored on its next possession, but Mansell gave Rider the lead for good when he made a layup with 38.8 seconds left. Rider then sealed the win when Mansell and Mike Ringgold both hit free throws in the closing seconds.
Ryan Thompson had 19 points and nine rebounds for Rider, which defeated Rutgers for the first time in 13 meetings. Justin Thompson added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Broncs, who won their third straight game.
Rutgers got 18 points from Anthony Farmer, while J.R. Inman added 15 and Jaron Griffin had 13. Hamady Ndiaye had eight rebounds and six blocked shots for the Scarlet Knights, who shot just 36.1 percent from the floor.
