Raivio scores 15 points; Portland beats Northern Colorado, 70-63
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Nik Raivio scored 15 points and Sherrard Watson added 14 as Portland outlasted Northern Colorado for a 70-63 victory on Friday.
Raivio made only 4 of 11 shots but he also contributed five rebounds and four assists, both of which were team highs. Robert Palacios led Northern Colorado with 13 points.
The Pilots (4-8) appeared to be in control after jumping to a 38-25 halftime lead. But the visiting Bears (5-6) quickly climbed back into the contest with an 18-4 run to start the second half. That run was capped by Palacios’ steal and layup, which gave Northern Colorado a 43-42 lead with 12:30 left in the half.
Then, Portland responded with six unanswered points, which gave the Pilots the lead for good.
Their deficit was just 56-55 after a basket by Palacios and a three-point play by Neal Kingman, who finished the night with 10 points. But the Pilots gradually widened the margin, thanks to a 10-for-10 effort from the foul line over the final 66 seconds.
Portland finished the game 23 of 30 (77 percent) from the foul line but the Pilots hit only 5 of 17 three-point attempts. Northern Colorado was even worse from the three-point line, though, making just 3 of 16 attempts.
The Bears also committed 20 turnovers, which led to 23 points for Portland.
