ASU’s Wedel scores 30 against FAU, including game-winner
JONESBORO, Ark. (AP)—The final 2 points by Ryan Wedel were the most important of the 30 he scored Thursday night for Arkansas State in a 79-77 victory over Florida Atlantic in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams.
A jumper by Wedel with 24 seconds left in the game broke a tie at 77 and put the Indians (5-5, 1-0 SBC) on top by the final margin.
Wedel made 6-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc to account for half his team’s points from long distance.
The visiting Owls (3-8, 0-1) trailed 40-37 at the half, but stayed close throughout the second period, leading 75-72 with 2:26 remaining.
ASU’s Yima Chia-Kur tied it up—the 12th tie of the game—with a 3-pointer at the 2-minute mark, and two free throws by Shawn Morgan gave the Indians the lead. But a layup by FAU’s Jeff Parmer with 47 seconds remaining knotted the contest again at 77 until Wedel hit his game-winning jumper.
Chia-Kur finished with 16 points for ASU, while Morgan added 14.
Carderro Nwoji led FAU’s scoring with 25 points—including 7-of-11 from long distance—and Carlos Monroe added 15 points, while also pulling down 14 rebounds.
