W. Michigan ends four-game slide with 57-41 win over S. Illinois
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP)—Joe Reitz scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Western Michigan to a 57-41 over Southern Illinois on Tuesday night.
The Broncos (5-6) broke a four-game losing streak and earned their first-ever win over the Salukis (4-5). Western Michigan led for nearly the entire game and held Southern Illinois to their lowest point total of the season.
Reitz, a senior center who notched his second double-double of the season, dominated the Salukis inside, converted all eight free throw attempts and grabbed six defensive rebounds.
Randal Falker and Bryan Mullins each scored nine points for Southern Illinois, which was ranked 19th in the nation earlier this season before dropping five of its last six games. Falker was held to one point in the first half and missed 8-of-10 shots. He led the Salukis with nine rebounds.
David Kool added 12 points for Western Michigan, and Andrew Hershberger came off the bench to score 9.
Southern Illinois made just 26.9 percent of its shots (14-of-52) and went more than eight minutes in the first half without a point. During that stretch, WMU scored 15 consecutive points and took charge of the game.
