MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP)—Desmond Yates scored 23 points Tuesday night to help Middle Tennessee beat Florida International 72-63.

Middle Tennessee (4-6, 1-0 Sun Belt Conference) enjoyed its largest margin of the game with a 23-4 lead early in the first half.

But the Golden Panthers (3-6, 0-2) pulled to within four late in the second half when Michael James hit to free throws to close the margin to 67-63 with 1:14 left to play. That was as close as Florida International would get.

The Blue Raiders were 49 percent from the field, compared to 44 percent for the Golden Panthers.

Theryn Hudson scored 16 points for Middle Tennessee and Demetrius Green finished with 11. Russell Hicks led Florida International with 20 points and Alex Galindo added 14.
