Mitchell leads Missouri St. to 64-53 win over Texas-Pan American
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP)—Deven Mitchell scored 14 points to lead Missouri State to a 64-53 win over Texas-Pan American on Monday night in the opening round of the Las Vegas Classic.
UTPA (6-7), which scored just one basket in the first 9:22 of the game, trailed 31-19 early in the second half before going on an 11-4 run to cut Missouri State’s lead to 35-30 with 14:06 left.
But two 3-pointers by Spencer Laurie and a pair of free throws by Mitchell boosted Missouri State’s lead to 43-30 with 10:56 left.
Four 3-pointers and four free throws by UTPA pulled the Broncs to within two at 48-46 with 4:29 left, but they never got any closer.
UTPA trailed 53-49 with 2:09 left when a 3-pointer by Laurie put Missouri State up 56-49 with 1:15 left.
Chris Cooks finished with 13 for Missouri State (6-3), while Laurie and Drew Richards added 12 apiece.
Zach Trader led UTPA with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Brian Burrell and Nick Weiermiller had 11 points each.
