McCurdy comes up big, lifting Northern Arizona to 62-57 win over San Jose St.
CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP)—Ryan McCurdy had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and hit four free throws in the final minute to help Northern Arizona hold off San Jose State 62-57 on Saturday night.
Kyle Landry added 17 points for Northern Arizona (6-4), which shot 40 percent from the field but was just 2-of-18 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Justin Graham had 18 points for San Jose State (3-4), which was coached by assistant Donald Williams. Spartans coach George Nessman missed the game due to a family emergency.
Northern Arizona led 55-54 after San Jose State converted the Lumberjacks’ 21st turnover into a layup with 41.9 seconds left. McCurdy was fouled and converted both free throws, then got a steal on the defensive end.
McCurdy got the defensive rebound on the next possession and hit two more free throws to push the lead to 59-54. Nate Geiser sealed the win with two free throws with 6 seconds left.
The game was played at De Anza College because The Event Center, where the Spartans typically play, was unavailable due to fall commencement.
