Alexander’s 22 leads Stephen F. Austin past San Diego 56-50
SAN DIEGO (AP)—Josh Alexander scored a season-high 22 points and Matt Kingsley added 17 to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 56-50 win over San Diego on Saturday.
Alexander made five 3-pointers including two in the final three minutes as the Lumberjacks (8-1) held off the Toreros. Kingsley scored 15 second-half points and Stephen F. Austin rebounded from a poor shooting first half to hit 54.5 percent of its shots from the floor in the second half.
Stephen F. Austin, coming off one of the biggest wins in school history with a 66-62 victory at Oklahoma on Dec. 8, matched its best start in 26 years.
Gyno Pomare scored a game-high 25 points for San Diego (5-8), including 16 in the second half. Pomare made 8-of-11 shots from the floor and was 9-for-10 from the line. The Toreros lost despite shooting 63.2 percent from the floor in the second half.
De’Jon Jackson added 10 points for San Diego, which dropped its third consecutive game. Leading scorer Brandon Johnson, averaging 16.9 points, was held to five points. Johnson played only nine minutes in the first half due to foul trouble and didn’t take his first shot until two minutes into the second half.
