Christmas scores 17 as Temple handles Drexel, 64-51
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Dionte Christmas scored 17 points, Mark Tyndale added 14 and Temple used three scoring runs to defeat crosstown rival Drexel 64-51 on Saturday.
The Owls (5-5) won despite being outrebounded 40-29, including 15-5 on the offensive boards.
Frank Elegar scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and grabbed 12 rebounds for Drexel (5-5), which lost its fourth straight game.
Temple trailed 35-34 with 16:49 left to play before going on a 14-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Christmas, to lead 48-39.
The Dragons rallied behind Elegar and closed within 53-49 at the 5:25 mark, but Ryan Brooks hit a 3-pointer as Temple scored 10 straight points and took a 63-49 advantage.
The Owls had gone on a 15-2 run, including eight points by Tyndale, to take a 27-15 lead with 8:04 left in the first half. Drexel then scored 14 straight points by seven players. A 3-pointer by Chris Clark brought the Owls within 31-30 at halftime.
Temple, which lost to Drexel last season, has won nine of the last 10 games against the Dragons and holds a 28-9 edge in the series.
