Merthie scores 22 as Marshall beats Rio Grande
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—Darryl Merthie scored a career-high 22 points to lead Marshall past Rio Grande 87-51 Friday.
Merthie’s career day was helped by 5-of-7 shooting from the three-point line. He was 8-of-10 from the field and helped on defense with four steals.
Rio Grande pulled to within three points midway through the first half, but could not get any closer the rest of the contest. Marshall ended the first half on a 22-4 run fueled by eight points from Merthie and led 43-22 at the break.
Marshall never trailed in the contest and controlled Rio Grande in the second half, leading by as many as 36.
Markel Humphrey and Tirrell Baines each scored 13 points for Marshall. Matt Walls added 12 and Robbie Jackson had 10.
Will Norwell scored 10 points in the first half and finished with 14 to lead Rio Grande. Brandon Ivery added 11 points.
The Thundering Herd forced a season-high 26 turnovers for 33 points and shot 56 percent from the field. Marshall also hit 11 three-pointers, a team season high.
