Gibson leads New Mexico State to 80-43 win over Prairie View A&M
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP)—Jonathan Gibson scored 18 points to lead New Mexico State University to an 80-43 win over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday in the Pan American Center.
New Mexico State (5-7) held Prairie View (2-6) scoreless for nine minutes in the first half as Gibson led the Aggies on a 21-0 run for a 24-7 lead. By halftime, the Aggies led 43-15.
The Aggies missed five consecutive free throws to open the second half, but the Panthers were unable to cut the deficit.
Four Aggies ended with double digit point, including Hatila Passos, who had 13 points and nine rebounds. Gibson made three 3-pointers to finish just three points short of his career best.
Prairie View was led by Blake Thompson’s 8 points.
Although the Panthers held a 7-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game, they ended the first half with only 15 points, and leading scorer Freddie Edo was scoreless.
The Panthers also were plagued by turnovers, finishing with 22 compared to the Aggies’ 13.
New Mexico State was without senior Justin Hawkins on Tuesday night. Team officials said he was sidelined because of a hamstring injury.
