Carter scores 27 as UNCW pulls away to beat Coastal Carolina
WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP)—T.J. Carter scored a game-high 27 points, and North Carolina Wilmington broke open a tight game in the second half to pull away to an 80-68 victory over Coastal Carolina on Sunday.
UNCW (6-3) led 38-36 at halftime, but the Chanticleers (4-4) kept pace for the first 12 minutes. There were six lead changes before a 3-pointer by Coastal Carolina’s Everage Richardson tied the score at 59 with 8:03 remaining. But Todd Hendley broke the tie with a jumper with 7:26 left, opening the way to a 15-4 run over the next 5 minutes to put the Seahawks in control.
Carter hit 12 of 20 shots for UNCW, which shot 52 percent for the game. Hendley finished with 14 points, while Daniel Fountain and Vladimir Kuljanin had 13 points apiece for the Seahawks.
Richardson scored 19 to lead the Chanticleers.
