Flato scores 20 points as Yale beats Vermont 86-76
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP)—Eric Flato led five players in double figures with 20 points as Yale defeated Vermont 86-76 on Saturday.
Flato scored the first five points of the second half to give the Bulldogs (3-5) a 42-39 lead, and Yale never trailed again. Mike Trimboli led all scorers with a career-high 32 points for the Catamounts, which have lost three straight.
The Bulldogs opened the game with a 10-0 run, and it was 14-4 when all five Yale starters had scored. Vermont cut the deficit to 21-20 on a 10-0 run of its own, paced by back-to-back three-pointers by Trimboli.
The Vermont senior guard scored 16 points in the first half on 7-of-11 shooting and sank a jumper from the foul line, giving the Catamounts a 39-37 lead at the half.
Yale limited the Trimboli to just three shots for the first 14 minutes of the second half and the Bulldogs took control. Alex Zampier (12 points, 5 steals) hit two three-pointers in a 13-4 Yale run as the Bulldogs built a 64-53 lead.
Caleb Holmes added 18 points for Yale and Ross Morin and Travis Pinick both scored 11. Vermont (2-6) got 15 points off the bench from Colin McIntosh and 12 from Nick Vier.
