Alexander gets career-high 26 in W.Va.’s 92-68 win over Duquesne

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP)—Joe Alexander scored a career-high 26 points to lead West Virginia to a 92-68 win over Duquesne on Saturday night.

Da’Sean Butler added a career-high 18 points for West Virginia (7-1). Alex Ruoff scored 15 points and John Flowers had 13.

Shawn James scored 18 points for Duquesne (6-3).

West Virginia led by 11 at halftime. Alexander had 10 straight points for West Virginia during a 18-6 run that gave the Mountaineers their biggest lead, 80-53, with 7:15 left in the game.

The Mountaineers were helped by bonus free throws in the final nine minutes and shot a season-best 19-of-23 from the line. West Virginia also shot 56 percent from the floor.

West Virginia, which leads the nation in scoring margin and field-goal percentage allowed, held the Dukes to 41.5 percent from the floor and forced 15 turnovers, including nine steals.

West Virginia held a 38-24 rebounding advantage. Duquesne had no offensive rebounds in the first half and a season-low six for the game.

Duquesne took its only lead at 11-10 with 17 minutes left after Jamie Smalligan was called for a flagrant foul. Smalligan shoved Bill Clark to the floor at midcourt after Clark threw an elbow. Smalligan was ejected and Clark made the resulting free throws.

The altercation sparked West Virginia, which responded with a 15-2 run.
