Tulane bench has 36 points, 24 rebounds against Gardner-Webb
NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Kevin Sims scored 19 points and Donnavan Stith came off the bench for 15 points and 10 rebounds as Tulane beat Gardner-Webb 84-79.
The first half saw six ties and eight lead changes. Tulane (5-3) was ahead 41-40 at halftime but led for much of the second half and had a nine-point lead with less than two minutes left.
But Gardner-Webb (5-6) got eight of the next nine points, finishing with a 3-point shot by Takayo Siddle to cut the Green Wave’s lead to 81-79 with 0:39 left.
Sims was fouled on the next possession and hit his first free throw but missed the second.
Gardner Webb’s Grayson Flittner missed an attempt to tie the game with a 3-point shot.
Matt Wheaton grabbed the rebound, was immediately fouled and hit both free throws for Tulane’s final margin.
Tulane’s bench outscored the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 36-22, and grabbed 24 rebounds. Stith made nine points in the first half and six in the second, and Eric Vianney had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Sims had a game-best six assists and two steals.
Thomas Sanders led all scorers with 22 points for Gardner-Webb; Flittner and Siddle added 18 each.
