McDaniel’s key 3-pointer leads Sam Houston State over Saint Louis
ST. LOUIS (AP)—DeLouis Ramirez had 18 points and eight rebounds, and Shamir McDaniel contributed 13 points and seven rebounds as Sam Houston State remained perfect by defeating Saint Louis 61-53 Saturday night.
The Bearkats are 8-0 for the first time since 1973, when the team competed in the NAIA and went 28-0 to start the season. Saint Louis (6-5) lost for the first time at home under first-year coach Rick Majerus.
Saint Louis made just 17 field goals and shot 29 percent from the floor. Tommy Liddell III had 17 points.
Sam Houston State appeared to have things in control when McDaniel hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 52-37 with 4:34 remaining. But Saint Louis went on a 16-4 run and cut it to 56-53 on Liddell’s putback with 1 minute left.
McDaniel ended the hopes of a comeback when he buried his fourth 3-pointer of the game, this one from the right wing with 24 seconds left to make it 59-53.
Although he was just 4-of-10 overall, McDaniel hit 4-of-5 from behind the arc.
