Holmes, Smith combine for 51, lead Morgan State past La Salle
BALTIMORE (AP)—Reggie Holmes scored 26 points and Jamar Smith added 25 to lead Morgan State to a 93-87 victory over La Salle on Saturday.
Holmes capped a 19-3 run with a 3-pointer at the end of the first half to give Morgan State (5-4) a 40-32 lead, and the Explorers never recovered.
Darnell Harris, who was 7-for-13 from beyond the arc, led La Salle (3-4) with 25 points, and Yves Mekongo Mbala had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the Explorers’ second loss in four games.
Harris gave La Salle a 29-21 first-half lead on a 3-pointer with 7:37 left before Morgan State began its surge.
Smith brought the Bears within two points on a breakaway dunk with 4:15 left in the half, and Holmes’ free throw cut La Salle’s lead to 29-28. Boubacar Coly’s layup with 2:25 remaining tied the score at 32, and Holmes fed Smith for a dunk to give the Bears a 34-32 lead with 1:32 remaining.
Coly gave the Bears a 63-49 lead in the second half with a short jumper in the lane, and Smith made it a 16-point game with 5:50 to go. Sherman Diaz’s three-point play with 3:11 remaining cut Morgan State’s lead to 73-62, but Smith hit a short jumper to put the Bears back up by 13.
Holmes connected on a pair of free throws with 1:33 left to push the Bears’ lead to 87-67—their largest of the game.
