Eldridge scores 20 as Illinois State defeats Cincinnati 62-52
NORMAL, Ill. (AP)—Sophomore guard Osiris Eldridge scored 20 points as Illinois State improved to a perfect 6-0 record at Redbird Arena Saturday night, holding on for a 62-52 win over Cincinnati.
The Redbirds (6-3) held off a stiff Cincinnati rally late in the game after pulling ahead by as many as 19 points in the second half. The Bearcats (4-4) closed to within six points with less than two minutes to play before ISU senior guard Dom Johnson nailed a 3-pointer with 1:48 left to play to put the Redbirds up by nine.
ISU senior forward Anthony Slack scored 10 points, while Johnson tossed in nine. Eldridge led the Redbirds with nine rebounds.
The Redbirds played tight defense all night, holding Cincinnati offensive leader Deonta Vaughn to only eight points. He averages 16 points per game.
John Williamson, Adam Hrycaniuk and Jamual Warren all scored 11 points for Cincinnati.
The Redbirds led by as many as 16 points midway through the half and led at halftime 27-18.
ISU shot 41 percent from the field in the first half, compared to 28 percent for the Bearcats.
Both teams started slowly before the Redbirds quickened the pace, helped by 13 first-half points off the bench.
Saturday’s win marked the first time since the 2001-02 season that Illinois State has started 6-0 at home.
