Gilmore’s free throws sink Jacksonville
WASHINGTON (AP)—Brian Gilmore hit two free throws with 2.9 seconds left to finish an 11-2 run and American beat Jacksonville 52-50 Friday night.
American (6-4), which trailed 48-41 with just under four minutes left, tied the game 50-50 when Garrison Carr hit a long jumper with less than a minute to go.
The Dolphins (3-5) had a chance to go ahead, but turned the ball over when Lehmon Colbert was called for an offensive foul with 31 seconds left trying to beat Gilmore at the top of the key.
At the other end, Paul Kohlheim blocked Carr’s short jumper, but Gilmore grabbed the loose ball in front of his bench and drew a foul on Andre McMillan. After Gilmore made the two free throws, Jordan Nichols broke up Jacksonville’s crosscourt inbound pass to end the game.
Mercer led American with 17 points and Gilmore added 13.
Colbert had 17 points and Smith chipped in 10 for Jacksonville, which lost its fifth straight game.
