Oakland holds off UMKC rally for 114-105 OT win
ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP)—Derick Nelson scored eight of his career-high 31 points in overtime as Oakland overcame a spectacular UMKC comeback to post a 114-105 victory in the Summit League opener for both teams.
The Golden Grizzlies (4-4, 1-0 Summit) led by 23 points with 13:47 to play, but Dane Brumagin scored 29 points in the second half to get the Kangaroos (3-6, 0-1) back into the game. Brumagin finished with a career-high 40, including seven 3-pointers.
Brumagin hit three straight 3-pointers to pull the Kangaroos within 93-92 with 38 seconds left, but fouled out moments later.
Johnathan Jones hit two free throws to make it 95-92, but freshman Reggie Hamilton’s 3-pointer tied the game for the first time since the Golden Grizzlies took a 7-0 lead in the opening 90 seconds.
Nelson, though, scored the first five points of overtime and Oakland pulled away.
Erik Kangas added 22 points for Oakland, while Keith Benson had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Jones finished with 13 points and 13 assists.
Hamilton had 19 for UMKC.
