VCU wins conference opener over William & Mary 71-57
RICHMOND, Va. (AP)—Jamal Shuler had 21 points to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a 71-57 win over William & Mary Wednesday in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.
Eric Maynor added 15 points and nine assists for the Rams (5-3, 1-0).
David Schneider led William & Mary (1-5, 0-1) with 15, and Laimis Kisielius and Danny Sumner each scored 13.
Virginia Commonwealth closed the first half with a 19-6 run to lead 36-23 at the break.
The Rams stretched their lead to 18 in the second half before Sumner scored six points and Kisielius hit two 3-pointers during a 12-2 William & Mary run to bring the Tribe to within eight with 9:27 remaining. Nathan Mann’s layup brought the Tribe to within six, at 56-50, but the Rams answered with a 9-1 run to go up 65-51 with 4:16 and they never let William & Mary get closer than 10 the rest of the way.
