ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP)—Michael Jenkins scored 13 of his 19 points in the final four minutes to lead Winthrop back from a 10-point deficit and defeat Akron 68-58 on Tuesday night.

The Eagles (5-3) trailed 55-45 after Nate Linehart’s three-point play with 4:46 left. But behind Jenkins, Winthrop finished by outscoring Akron (5-2) 23-3 the rest of the way.

Jenkins was a big reason why. His four-point play—Jenkins hit a 3-pointer as he was knocked to the floor and connected on the free throw—put the Eagles ahead 57-55.

The Zips took their final lead, 58-57 with 2:00 to go on Nick Goddard’s foul shot and a basket by Steve McNees. But Jenkins came right back with a jumper six seconds later to put the Eagles ahead for good.

Akron did not score again.

The Eagles fell behind as Taj McCullough sat on the bench for all but 2:10 of the opening half with foul trouble. Even with McCullough back in after the break, Winthrop struggled and was down by 10 after Linehart’s basket and foul shot.

That set the stage for Jenkins to lead the Eagles back.

McCullough finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Akron was led by Jeremiah Wood, who had 17 points and 13 rebounds.
