Freshman leads Shockers to 77-68 win over UMBC
WICHITA, Kan. (AP)—Freshman J.T. Durley scored a career-high 17 points and Wichita State beat Maryland-Baltimore County 77-68 on Tuesday night at Koch Arena.
It was the fourth consecutive victory for Wichita State (5-2) and snapped a three-game winning streak for UMBC (6-2).
P.J. Couisnard had 14 points for the Shockers, Matt Braeuer had 13, Gal Mekel had 12 and Ramon Clemente added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Brian Hodges led UMBC with 25 points, Jay Greene had 20 and Darryl Proctor added 10.
The game had all the makings of a rout after Wichita State went on two 10-0 runs late in the first half and led 43-28 at halftime
Hodges kept UMBC as close as it was, scoring 15 of the Retrievers’ final 17 points in the first half.
Wichita State couldn’t completely shake UMBC after building its lead to 18 points early in the second half.
The Retrievers chipped away and got as close as six points three times in the game’s final 5:33—the last time after Hodges’ basket with 40 seconds remaining—before WSU closed it out at the free throw line.
