Four Bulldogs in double figures stop Keydets, 89-88
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP)—Carrio Bennett had 14 points to lead four South Carolina State players in double figures and the Bulldogs held the nation’s top-scoring offense under its average in a 89-88 victory over VMI on Tuesday night.
The Keydets (3-5) had come in averaging 98.7 points in the game, best in the country. However, it was Bennett and the Bulldogs that showed the winning scoring touch.
Bennett missed only one of his six shots from the field, hitting four 3-pointers and adding seven rebounds.
Everett Spencer finished with 13 points while Jason Flagler and Jason Johnson had 12 points each for South Carolina State. Flagler also had 12 rebounds.
VMI led 65-56 on Reggie Williams’ layup. But South Carolina State responded with a 16-5 run capped by Bennett’s 3-pointer with 10:39 remaining.
The Bulldogs held an 89-84 lead with 1:04 to go after Thomas Bookman’s 3-pointer and VMI could not catch up.
Williams, sixth in the country in scoring at 24.6 points a game, matched his average to lead VMI (3-5) with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Travis Holmes added 19 points.
South Carolina State has won two straight and three of its past four.
