Florence hits game-winner to lead Mercer to 93-92 win
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)—James Florence scored 28 points, including the winning shot with a second to go, as Mercer beat Charleston Southern 93-92 on Monday night.
The Buccaneers (4-5) had just broken a tie with seven seconds to go on a free throw by Giedrius Knysas before Florence’s jumper gave Mercer (2-5) its first lead of the second half.
Florence was fouled on the play and missed his free throw. But Charleston Southern didn’t have enough time to get off a shot.
The Bears (2-5) trailed 79-69 with just under seven minutes to go, but scored eight points in less than two minutes to erase nearly all the deficit.
Charleston Southern hit only 3-of-8 free throws in the final minute, and missed three of four foul shots in the final 10 seconds.
Jamarco Warren led the Buccaneers with 22 points. Omar Carter scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds, while Chris Moore added 19 points.
Calvin Henry scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Shaddean Aaron added 16 points and eight rebounds for Mercer.
