Davis leads South Alabama past Houston Baptist, 66-62
MOBILE, Ala. (AP)—Brandon Davis had 15 points and eight rebounds and South Alabama hit 5-of-6 free throws over the final 1:05 to beat Houston Baptist 66-62 on Sunday.
Davis gave the Jaguars (5-3) the lead for good with two foul shots for a 63-62 edge against Houston Baptist (1-11), a transitional Division I member.
Then Domonic Tifford hit two more from the line and Ronald Douglas put it out of reach when he made 1 of 2 with 9 seconds to play.
South Alabama got 11 points from Deon Merritt. Demetric Bennett added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Baron Sauls led Houston Baptist with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Andrew Puzyk added 12 points while Gordon Watt scored 10, but also committed eight of Houston Baptist’s 20 turnovers. It was the 11th consecutive loss for Houston Baptist.
The Jaguars shot just 38 percent and made 6-of-23 3-pointers in their worst shooting performance of the season.
Houston Baptist, meanwhile, shot 48 percent, made 8-of-17 3s and outrebounded the Jaguars 35-27, but couldn’t overcome the turnovers.
