Mbang scores 22 to lead Rhode Island past New Hampshire
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP)—Joe Mbang scored 22 points and Kahiem Seawright added 13 points and ten rebounds to pace Rhode Island past New Hampshire 87-76 on Saturday.
Will Daniels and Parfait Bitee each had 14 points and Jimmy Baron added 12 as the Rams improved to 8-1 for the first time since the 1991-92 season.
Tyrone Conley led New Hampshire (3-3) with 22 points.
The Wildcats took an early 18-7 lead before the Rams went on a 13-0 run, capped off by Baron’s 3-pointer, for a 22-20 lead.
Both teams were hot from long range. Rhode Island connected on 10 of 24 3-point field goals (42 percent), while the Wildcats hit on 14 of 27 for 52 percent. Baron led the Rams by hitting 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Bitee equaled his season his of eight assists in the win.
New Hampshire narrowed a 21-point gap to ten with 4:09 remaining with a 14-3 run. But Rhode Island limited the Wildcats to three field goals over the final 3:54 to secure the win.
Mike Christensen, the Wildcats leading scorer, finished with 18 points, including four three pointers. Tyrece Gibbs added 17 points and eight rebounds for New Hampshire.
