Cal State Northridge beats N.C. Central 69-43

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)—Calvin Chitwood and Jonathan Heard each scored 11 points to lead Cal State Northridge past North Carolina Central 69-43 Saturday in the consolation game of the Drake Iowa Realty Invitational Tournament.

Eleven players scored for Cal State Northridge (5-1), which bounced back from Friday’s loss to Duquesne by forcing 31 turnovers and shooting 21-of-37 from inside 3-point range.

Northridge put the game out of reach with an 8-0 run in the opening 1:49 of the second half. Paul Wayne and Ron Haynes keyed the spurt with back-to-back baskets, putting the Matadors ahead 37-18.

N.C. Central (1-9) briefly pulled within 14, but Cal State Northridge answered with a 17-8 run to make it 57-34 with 5:35 left. The Eagles forced 23 turnovers but went just 15-of-31 from the free throw line.

J’Mell Walters had 12 points to lead N.C. Central, which was playing its ninth game away from home.
