Justin Johnson scores 25 as Iowa beats Eastern Illinois 57-45
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP)—Justin Johnson scored 25 points and Iowa defeated Eastern Illinois 57-45 in the consolation game of the Hawkeye Challenge to snap a four-game losing streak.
Iowa (5-4), in the unfamiliar role of playing in the consolation game of their own tournament after losing Friday night to Louisiana-Monroe 72-67 in overtime, shot 45.7 percent from the floor and forced 15 turnovers. Iowa improved to 50-2 in the Hawkeye Challenge.
Johnson scored 13 points in the first half, and added four 3’s in the first four minutes of the second half as Iowa used a 20-5 run to take control of the game.
At one point in the second half, Johnson was outscoring Eastern Illinois 25-24.
The Panthers (1-6) trailed the entire game, but were only down five at halftime and three for an early stretch in the second half. But Iowa’s run, coupled with a seven minute scoreless drought by the Panthers, pushed the lead to 20.
Freshman Jarryd Cole, making his second career start alongside fellow first-year player Jake Kelly, added 10 points and four rebounds.
The Hawkeyes took better care of the basketball than they did Friday, committing 16 turnovers. Iowa had 29 giveaways against Louisiana-Monroe.
Romain Martin led the Panthers with 18 points.
