Greene scores 21 as UMBC beats American 83-68

WASHINGTON (AP)—Jay Greene tied a career-high with 21 points, hitting six 3-pointers, to lead Maryland-Baltimore County to a 83-68 win over American on Saturday.

Brian Hodges scored 19 points, and Ray Barbosa and Darryl Proctor each had 14 for UMBC. The Retrievers’ 6-1 start this season is their best since joining Division I prior to the 1986-87 season.

Derrick Mercer scored 26 points for American (4-4).

UMBC trailed by 11 points in the first half, but went on a 16-2 run early in the second half to take a 52-45 lead. After a brief American rally, UMBC put the game away with a 13-0 run to take a 68-53 lead and wasn’t threatened the rest of the way.

It was the first time the two teams had met since 1987. UMBC holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series. ^
