Late free throws keep Hampton ahead of VCU

HAMPTON, Va. (AP)—Rashad West scored nine of his 17 points from the free throw line as Hampton held on to beat Virginia Commonwealth 64-55 Thursday night.

The teams were tied at 18 at halftime, and the score was tied four more times before Adrian Woodard’s layup gave Hampton a 37-36 lead with 7:01 remaining and they never gave it up. Woodard’s basket and foul with 3:05 left to play was Hampton’s last field goal. He hit the extra shot, and the Pirates made 15 of their last 20 free throw attempts to stay ahead.

Hampton sank 26-of-36 free throws, compared to just 7-of-9 for the Rams.

VCU (3-3) turned the ball over 21 times, leading to 19 points for Hampton.

Woodard scored 10 points for Hampton (3-3).

Eric Maynor led VCU with 22 points, and Jamal Shuler hit five 3-pointers for 15 points.
