Barbosa, Johnson spark Retrievers past Morgan State, 84-76
CATONSVILLE, Md. (AP)—Ray Barbosa scored 21 points, Cavell Johnson added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Maryland-Baltimore County beat Morgan State 84-76 on Thursday night.
Darryl Proctor had 18 points and Jay Greene recorded 11 assists for the Retrievers (5-1), who have won two straight and are off to their best start since 2000-2001. UMBC, which has won two straight, committed only seven turnovers.
Jamar Smith led the Bears (3-3) with 25 points. Marquise Kately scored 22 points and Reggie Holmes 14 for Morgan State, which could not escape an early 20-point deficit and lost its second consecutive game.
Barbosa scored 15 first-half points, Brian Hodges added 11 and UMBC’s up-tempo, penetrating offense surprised the Bears, who trailed 47-32 at halftime.
Morgan State started 2-for-17 from the field and never recovered, allowing the Retrievers to sprint to a 25-8 lead and falling behind by as many as 20 points on Matt Spadafora’s left-wing 3-pointer with 4:30 left in the half.
The Bears rallied after losing guard Jerrell Green to an off-the-ball injury with 13:31 remaining in the game. Green crumpled to the floor, screaming in pain with a right heel injury and had to be helped from the court.
But Morgan responded with a 10-0 run, part of a 19-8 burst capped by Holmes’ basket off Greene’s turnover that cut UMBC’s lead to 73-68 with 5:11 left.
