Smith scores season-high 16 points as George Mason beats Drexel
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP)—Dre’ Smith scored a season-high 16 points and led four Patriots in double figures as George Mason defeated visiting Drexel 85-38.
George Mason (6-1, 1-0) shot 50.9 percent en route to its most lopsided home victory since beating Howard 106-55 on December 1, 1998. The 47-point victory margin also established a new record against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent.
Folarin Campbell scored 11 points, and Will Thomas and Chris Fleming each added 10 points. A total of 10 Patriots players scored points.
George Mason opened the game by hitting eight of its first 13 shots, including four 3-pointers. The Patriots took an early 22-7 lead en route to a 40-15 halftime advantage.
Tramayne Hawthorne paced Drexel (5-2, 0-1) with 11 points, and Gerald Colds added 10.
Drexel, which entered the game shooting a CAA-best 42.3 percent from 3-point range, made just two of 12 3-pointers, including just 15 of 50 (30 percent) overall from the floor.
Thomas’ basket pushed the Patriots lead to 48-17 as George Mason scored the first eight points of the second half. Kenny Tribbett’s basket at the 16:54 mark ended the Dragons’ six-minute scoreless drought, which extended into the first half.
