Sowell leads St. Peter’s past Monmouth 72-62
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP)—Todd Sowell scored 23 points and pulled down 18 rebounds to lead St. Peter’s to its third straight victory, a 72-62 win over Monmouth on Wednesday night.
Nick Leon added 18 points for the Peacocks (3-2), while Raul Orta had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jhamar Youngblood had a game-high 25 points for Monmouth (2-4), which only made 37 percent of its shots from the floor.
The teams traded baskets for most of the first half, with the Peacocks holding a 36-32 lead at halftime. St. Peter’s then tried to pull away in the second half, but the Hawks hung tough and cut the lead to 66-62 when Youngblood made two free throws with 2:10 left to play.
The Hawks would not score again, though, and the Peacocks—who only made three baskets over the final nine minutes—sealed the win by making six foul shots in the final minute.
