Portland State tops cross-town rival 78-73
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Deonte Huff, Tyrell Mara and Scott Morrison scored 15 points apiece to help Portland State outlast cross-town rival Portland 78-73 on Wednesday.
Jeremiah Dominguez, who transferred from Portland to Portland State, added 12 points for the Vikings (4-3).
Sherrard Watson and Nik Raivio both had 20 points for Portland (2-5).
Mara’s 3-pointer gave Portland State a 37-35 lead at the break, and the Vikings extended the lead to double figures with a 13-5 run over the first five minutes of the second half.
Portland got back into the game behind the perimeter game of Watson and the inside play of Luke Sikma, who finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Watson scored his team’s first nine points of the second half and Sikma canned back-to-back buckets that trimmed Portland State’s lead to 56-52 with 9:04 remaining.
Morrison and Dominguez later combined for nine points in a three-minute span to push Portland State’s lead to 72-63.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Jared Stohl and Raivio trimmed the deficit to 72-69 with 1:26 left, but the Vikings made six free throws down the stretch to seal the win. ^
