Mendez scores 23 points in Georgia State 65-60 win over Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)— Leonard Mendez scored 23 points, including what proved to be the winning basket with 1:30 left in the game, as Georgia State posted a 65-60 win over Jacksonville on Tuesday.
Mendez hit 9-of-18 shots including four baskets from 3-point range and was the only Georgia State player in double figures.
His jumper with 90 seconds left in the game gave the Panthers (2-3) a 61-54 lead. Jacksonville (3-2) scored six consecutive points to cut the deficit to one with 25 seconds to play, but four Georgia State free throws in the final seconds secured the win.
Jacksonville committed 11 first-half turnovers, many of which led to the Panthers’ 15-0 advantage in fast break points in the opening 20 minutes.
Georgia State held a 34-31 lead at halftime.
Jacksonville tied the game at 44-all with 12 minutes left in the second half, but the Dolphins’ shooting went cold after that as they managed just one basket over the next seven minutes. Mendez scored six points during that stretch as the Panthers went on a 13-2 run to open up an 11-point lead at 57-46.
The Dolphins shot just 30 percent in the second half, 37.5 percent for the entire game as starting guards Ben Smith and Andre McMillan were a combined 4-of-21.
Lehmon Colbert led Jacksonville with 17 points.
