Humphrey’s 3-pointers lead Georgia over Delaware State
ATHENS, Ga. (AP)—Billy Humphrey scored 18 points on six 3-point baskets to lead Georgia to a 58-47 win over Delaware State on Wednesday night.
Freshman Troy Brewer hit four 3-pointers to add 12 points for Georgia (4-1).
Roy Bright led Delaware State (2-4) with 12 points, but hit just four of 16 shots, including just two of 11 from beyond the 3-point line. Trevor Welcher and Marcus Neal scored 10 apiece for the Hornets.
Freshmen Jeremy Jacob, Zac Swansey and Brewer accounted for the first 12 of Georgia’s points during a 14-3 run in the middle of the first half that pushed the Bulldogs’ lead to 26-11, capped by a steal and layup by Gaines with 5:42 to play in the half.
Humphrey hit three treys in the first 90 seconds of the second half as Georgia took a 42-21 lead. After another 3-pointer by Terrence Woodbury with 16:05 to go, Georgia had its biggest lead at 45-23.
The Hornets followed Woodbury’s basket with a 9-0 run. Neal hit a short jumper and a 3-pointer during the streak.
Brewer’s fourth 3-pointer of the game gave the Bulldogs a 56-41 lead with 7:05 to play. Georgia went scoreless over the next 5:16 and Trevor Welcher’s two free throws pulled the Hornets within 11 at 56-45 with 2:56 to play. But Delaware State could get no closer.
It was the Hornets’ second straight loss to a Southeastern Conference team. They lost at Arkansas, 89-67, on Saturday.
Sundiata Gaines’ four rebounds for Georgia gave him 503 for his career. He joins Shandon Anderson as the only players in Georgia basketball history to amass 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in their careers.
