Winthrop wins fourth straight against East Carolina 72-57
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP)—Michael Jenkins scored 20 points and Winthrop beat East Carolina 72-57 on Wednesday night to snap a two-game losing streak.
Taj McCullough added 18 points for Winthrop (4-2), which shot 48.3 percent and held East Carolina to 37.3 percent shooting in beating the Pirates (2-4) for the fourth straight time.
Chris Gaynor had 13 points for the Eagles, who outrebounded East Carolina 38-32 and forced 19 turnovers, scoring 22 points off those miscues.
Cory Farmer, who had 10 points, was the Pirates’ only double-figure scorer. Winthrop took a 35-22 halftime lead and led by 22 in taking a 5-4 series lead against East Carolina.
Winthrop outscored the Pirates 38-18 in the paint and had 16 second-chance points to East Carolina’s four.
