Gibson scores 18 as Hawaii beats Coppin St. 79-58
HONOLULU (AP)—Matt Gibson scored 18 points in his return to the lineup, leading five players in double figures as Hawaii defeated Coppin State 79-58 on Tuesday night.
Riley Luettgerodt scored 17 points for Hawaii (2-3), Bill Amis 16, Jared Dillinger 11 and Bobby Nash 10.
Hawaii (2-3) opened the second half on an 11-3 run to lead 51-35 with 15 minutes remaining.
The Rainbow Warriors continued to build on the lead and two free throws by Gibson gave them a 67-45 lead with 7:32 left in the game.
Returning from knee surgery, Gibson played in his first game of the season. He started 30 of 31 games last season, averaging 10.2 points per game.
A?daeron Duncan scored 15 points and Robert Pressey added 11 for the Eagles (3-4).
Coppin State played without leading scorer Tywain McKee, who is out with a foot injury. He’s averaging 21.3 points per game.
Gibson hit a 3-pointer to give Hawaii a 37-28 lead with 1:15 left in the first half.
Vince Goldsberry scored back-to-back baskets for Coppin State to cut the lead to 37-32, but Dillinger hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to lift the Rainbow Warriors to a 40-32 halftime lead.
