Toney’s shooting leads UNC Greensboro past S.C.-Upstate
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP)—Kendall Toney scored 24 points and flirted with an NCAA 3-point shooting record in North Carolina-Greensboro’s 93-76 victory against South Carolina-Upstate on Saturday night.
Kyle Hines added 19 points—his NCAA-best 54th straight game in double figures—and 11 rebounds for UNC Greensboro (3-1), which led 50-36 at halftime and cruised to an easy victory in its home opener.
Toney, who finished 8-of-9 from 3-point range, made his first eight attempts to move within one of the NCAA record of 9-of-9 that was set three times. But he missed his ninth try with about 4 minutes remaining.
Luke Payne had 15 points to lead S.C.-Upstate (0-5), which allowed UNC Greensboro to shoot 54 percent. Rashawn Brailsford added 14 points, Nick Schneiders scored 11 points and Bobby Davis had 10.
Ben Stywall and Mike Koivisto each scored 13 points for UNC Greensboro, which outrebounded S.C. Upstate 35-30.
