Deric’s 3 helf Loyola Marymount beat Mercer in overtime
MACON, Ga. (AP)—Marko Deric’s 3-pointer with 30 seconds left in overtime gave Loyola Marymount a lead it never relinquished in a 97-72 victory over Mercer on Saturday.
Deric’s basket made it 93-91 and the Lions (2-4) stretched the lead to 95-91 before Mercer (1-4) got its final point on a free throw by Mark Hall with 18 seconds left.
Mercer opened its season with an upset of Southern California in Los Angeles, also the home of the Lions.
Orlando Johnson led Loyola with 21 points and 9 rebounds, Jon Ziri and Q;uentin Turner each added 15 and Deric finished with 14.
Hall, who made 15 of 17 free throw, led the Bears with 30 points and Brian Pfohl added 19.
Loyola held 10-point leads several times in the first half, settling for a 47-41 lead at intermission. The Bears trailed 81-79 in the final minute of regulation before Hall forced the extra period by hitting a pair of free throws with 35 seconds to play.
