South Alabama routs San Diego 77-55 in Anaheim Classic

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Demetric Bennett scored 28 points to lead South Alabama in a 77-55 rout of San Diego on Friday night in the Anaheim Classic.

The Jaguars (3-2) advanced to Sunday’s fourth-place game against Chattanooga, which beat UC Irvine 85-80.

Domonic Tilford came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points for the Jaguars. Brandon Davis added a career-high 15 points and DeAndre Coleman grabbed nine rebounds. Bennett’s total was one off his career high and came a night after he was held to eight points against Miami of Ohio.

South Alabama shot a season-high 50 percent from the floor.

Brandon Johnson scored 17 points and Gyno Pomare added 11 points for the Toreros (2-4), who lost their fourth consecutive game.

They will play UC Irvine in the seventh-place game Sunday.

Tilford scored 10 straight points to put South Alabama ahead 19-10 in the first half. Pomare narrowed the margin to 19-13 with a layin and a free throw, but the Jaguars then went on another 10-0 run.

Davis and Daon Merritt had four points apiece in that spurt to extend South Alabama’s lead to 29-13.

The Toreros made only one basket in a span of 8:50 during the first half, and failed to score a field goal in the final 4:32. They shot 22 percent in the half.
